| Description |
ZION Flix V: Documentary Shorts A selection of documentaries that celebrate the Americas through art, nature, music and cultural diversity. The desires of what can be accomplished are also met with challenges.
Ascending the Giants Utah Premiere Shorts Competition â Documentary U S A (2009) 13 min. (1.78:1) In English DIR John Waller CAST Brian French, Will Koomjian Brian French and Will Koomjian are Portland, Oregon based arborists by trade, who started an organization called Ascending the Giants in 2006. With the goal of aiding preservation efforts for champion trees, their mission is to showcase these specimens to increase knowledge of their existence and ecological importance. With stunning big tree cinematography, the action and danger assumed by Brian and Will to measure these trees is captured, but with greater emphasis upon the emotional connection of the trees. New American Soldier Mountain West Premiere Shorts Competition â Documentary U S A (2009) 24 min. (1.78:1) In Spanish, Cantonese, English, and Ghanian with English subtitles DIR Emma Cott, Anna Belle Peevey Three immigrant soldiers are followed through the ups and downs of training and deployment, and as they take steps towards achieving U.S. citizenship by serving in the U.S. military. By taking two of the hottest debates in our country â the post 9/11 war and immigration policy â out of the bi-partisan political arena, and into the lives of real people, this short cuts straight to the heart of these issues. Ritmo do Morumbi Rhythm of Morumbi â Mountain West Premiere Shorts Competition â Documentary Brazil, U S A (2009) 22 min. (1.78:1) In Portuguese with English subtitles DIR Zara Ahmed, Joshua Kun, Tyson Hauff, Gabrielle Bashist, Tyler Zelinsky, Rhianon Gutierrez, Collin Martin CAST Flavio Pimenta Meninos do Morumbi is a performing arts school in Sao Paolo, Brazil that gives children from favelas (slums) hope for the future. The film depicts the various hardships faced in everyday favela life: violence, poverty, drug abuse, etc. It also takes it back to the school and shows the positive influences students gain at the school. Unconquered: Allan Houser and the Legacy of One Apache Family Utah Premiere Featurette Shorts Competition â Documentary U S A (2009) 33 min. (1.78:1) In English DIR Bryan Beasley CAST Phillip Haozous, Bob Haozous, Ann Marie Houser The Houser / Haozous story is a journey exploring the incarceration of a people, growth brought on by freedom, and a familyâs personal expression of these experiences through art.
